This is a wonderful website with more information on Silkies.

https://chickenexperts.com/blogs/chickens/silkie-chickens-a-masterclass-with-the-experts

The Silkie is a Bantam (mini) chicken and is a popular choice for backyard flocks whose owners want a personable, cute, fluffy, chicken with a great personality. Silkies are slow moving and have a cute little waddle walk! They are truly the "lap dogs" of the chicken world! Silkie hens make wonderful mothers and produce a manageable amount of eggs for a family. The rooster is kind to his hens and has a lower decibel crow that is short-lived and not constant. My roosters love to protect their flock but are not aggressively seeking out confrontation with family members. I may get a little peck that doesn't hurt when I put him to bed too early at night! Silkies are not built for flight which makes them easy to keep in a specific area and to pick up for cuddles. Silkies are a favorite choice for children and adults as pets! ***Genders**Silkies are a breed where you can only identify the gender when it is 4-5 months old or if you do a DNA test.

Congratulations on your new additions!

Here are some helpful tips to help your little feathered cuties get the best start.

  • For the trip home Hatchlings will need to be kept warm.

  • Hatchlings require average temperatures of 95 degrees. This temperature can be reduced by 5 degrees weekly.

  • Brooder plate or warming light is needed

  • Provide Unlimited Fresh water.

  • Offer water with Poultry NutriDrench

You can add Poultry Nutri Drench to hatchlings water to give them added nutritional support. I like to offer both fresh water and poultry cell. After they are 4 weeks old, I like to give them a Poultry Cell in their water weekly.

*Silkies require more protein in their diet than other chicken breeds to support their beautiful fluffy feathers.

A suggested Diet should be made up of 22-24% protein.

I suggest crumble form mixture of:

18-20% protein chick starter, 20% Flockraiser, and 30% gamebird .  50/25/25

Enjoy your new fluffy cuties!
